An outdoor arts event unlike any you have encountered before - and anything
but stuffy! On May 17 and 18, Sculpture in the South will present the tenth
annual Exhibit and Sale in Summerville's Azalea Park. In a beautifully
landscaped setting, this national show brings together thirty-six renowned
sculptors along with their artwork, ranging from cowboys to ballet dancers,
abstract forms to exotic animals. The participating artists have created
works found in public installations across the U.S., as well as in National
Sculpture Society Exhibits, Brookgreen Gardens, and the permanent
collection at Buckingham Palace. Known for its exceptional quality,
Sculpture in the South has emerged onto the national stage as one of the
premiere all-sculpture events.
Throughout the weekend, the public has the opportunity to get acquainted
with sculptors who are at the top of their field and who share candidly
about the stories that inspire their work. Whether you're a novice or a
long-time collector, an afternoon at the Sculpture in the South will
transform the way you look at art from now on, because when you learn about
the artist, you appreciate the artwork in a whole new context.
What makes Sculpture in the South an arts experience?
Variety
From miniature to monumental, whimsical to inspirational, whether it is a
wildlife sculpture that depicts the animal's character through posture or a
human figure that gives insight into deep emotions, you will find in
yourself meaningful responses to the wide scope of subject matter.
Discover work in bronze, stone, wood, and terra cotta, suitable for the
sitting room or city park.
Texture
Sculpture is one of the few art forms that can be appreciated through the
sense of touch. Let your hands explore the contrast between a highly
polished surface and coarse natural stone. Feel the minutely-detail
feathers of a hawk sculpted from hardwood. Consider the warmth of terra
cotta, the cool touch of bronze and stone, the organic appeal of wood
sculpture.
Quality
Meet the quick-witted Texan named Garland Weeks, whose artwork is in the
permanent collection at Buckingham Palace. Get acquainted with the artists
whose works can be found in public installations across the country. As in
past years, Sculpture in the South will exhibit artwork created by students
in Dorchester District II Schools during the Sculptor-in-Residence program.
This artwork is always remarkable, showing the emerging talents of gifted
students.
Don't forget the Barbecue
That heavenly aroma wafting across the park emanates from award-winning
barbecue on an outdoor grill. Russ Cornette, of Smokin' Cole's Bayou
Barbecue, will be serving up robust pulled pork and brisket which have
wowed barbecue competition judges across the South. Fine art sculpture ...
and barbecue. This kind of welcome makes perfect sense to those who know
Summerville.
Proceeds from the Exhibit and Sale benefit the purchase of public
