This weekend marks the tenth anniversary of Sculpture in the South. What a
great thing for Summerville. This has become a grand event. Thirty-six
sculptors from all over the United States will visit our town for a weekend
to display and sell their artwork. It is a wonderful opportunity for
families to enjoy some time together and for children to learn something a
little different. Of course, also thanks to Sculpture in the South, there
are many pieces available year round in Azalea Park, Hutchinson Square,
behind Town Hall, in the pond at Shepards Park and at Gahagan Ball Fields.
On their website is a description of each piece and its location. Study up
and meet many of the artists who provided these town jewels.
DREAMfest has begun with the Art Walk on Short Central and a concert under
the stars on Hutchinson Square by the Air Force Celtic Ensemble. This is
sure to be a hit over the summer and into the fall as each third Thursday
there will be a new concert and the continuation of art available. The Art
Walk is being coordinated by Art Central's Alix Kassing and features not
only the artist within the consortium, but many others as well. Many of
the downtown stores will be open for a little after hours shopping. These
events are ongoing May through September with more information coming out
almost daily.
Plans have begun for Red, White and Blue on the Green. The committee is
looking for anyone interested in the planning process as well as
volunteering during the event. The incredible Katie DePoppe, owner of
RSVP, has agreed to chair the event. This is a fabulous, fun packed
afternoon celebrating the Fourth of July with food, games and a non-
motorized parade around Hutchinson Square. It will be followed by a
fireworks display provided by the town out at Gahagan Park (I think)
Contact the DREAM office for more information.
There are so many fun things coming up, the calendar may explode off the
page allotted. These are our own small town treasures. Those of us who
are from here can remember a time that these opportunities were just as
plentiful. There was a lull as we experienced some growing pains but the
door has swung back wide open. Those that have moved to the area did so
because of these types of activities. So come out and meet new friends
while you chat with old, enjoy the art and entertainment and live in the
community we love.
With Kind Regards,
