The Summerville Family YMCA's inaugural Prayer Breakfast was held on the
National Day of Prayer which was May 1. This year's event was held at
Bethany United Methodist Church with approximately 240 people in
attendance.
The event began with Dr. Bob Howell, Senior Pastor at Bethany, giving the
invocation. New Vision, the contemporary Christian ensemble from Charleston
Southern University, sand 2 songs and Elder Davis McDougald, of Antioch
Christian Fellowship, concluded the program with his benediction.
The keynote speaker was Chaplain Rob Dewey of the Coastal Crisis
Chaplaincy. Chaplain Dewey's organization supports emergency responders and
their families, as well as the general public in times of unexpected
crisis. Chaplain Dewey was the chaplain on the scene of the Sofa Super
Store Fire June 18, 2007 when nine local firemen lost their lives.
The breakfast was coordinated by YMCA staff members and various community
volunteers. YMCA Marketing and HR Director, Liz Graham, was thrilled with
the community's response to the breakfast. "Each person that I spoke to
about the event was excited to hear that we, as an organization, have made
a conscious decision to emphasize the 'C' in our name. Because this Prayer
Breakfast was so successful, we are hoping to make it an annual event."
