After reading David Chinnis' letter through, I think I have finally
gotten the gist of the matter. First, the 250-300 homeowners in
Summerhaven were double taxed for several years by the Town and the County
for fire protection.
Having met with town and country officials to no avail, they
approached Senator Randy Scott for help. They asked him to get an Attorney
General's opinion to help straighten the matter out and he replied, "We all
know it's wrong, what's the AG going to say?". In essence, he refused to
intervene and help 300 constituents.
After the writer saw articles in the Journal Scene whereby Senator
Scott obtained opinions on behalf of a man arrested and charged a $15.00
detention fee, on behalf of a unknown constituent regarding the validity of
the Summerville Sign ordinance and stating that any voter who participated
in the Democrat Primary for President can now vote in a Republican primary,
Chinnis then asked Senator Scott at the Azalea festival, why he would not
ask for an opinion from the Attorney General. Scott replied, "You've never
run for office, have you?" Guess three or four can get the senator to do
something but not if 300 taxpayers ask.
In October of 2007, two members of the Town Council stated to the
writer that the only way they were going to get out from under the double
taxation was to contact Mike Rose. This they did and Mike Rose, at no cost
to the taxpayers and no legal fees attached, went as a private citizen, not
as a Senator, to the Town Council, and got this matter resolved and now 300
taxpayers are being returned the double payments that they had paid.
It is interesting that this was done at the suggestion of two
obviously honest members of the Town Council, knowing that Mike rose would
have to come before them to resolution.
Result: 300 happy double taxed taxpayers, solution to the problem,
no financial gain to Mike Rose and everyone lives happily ever after.
This is no fairy tale; Mike Rose did not say, "When I am elected, I
will...." He acted. Wouldn't it be nice to have this talent working on
behalf of all the Dorchester County residents at no cost? Send Mike Rose
back to the Senate for true representation for all people.
