The Summerville Storm Youth Track Team held its season home track meet June
7th. The meet, held at the Summerville High School track, featured both
field and track events. Alongside the Storm, participants from numerous
surrounding area youth track teams took part in the event.
With temperatures in the high 90's, team organizers had plenty of ice and
water on hand. Many parents also came prepared with snacks, water and tent
covers for shade. Having practiced in the extreme temperatures earlier in
the week, the Storm athletes were well prepared to take on the heat as well
as the other teams.
Track events included the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 4x100 meter
races along with 80m, 100m and 200 meter hurdles. Athletes competed
according to age group in one or more of the events. The Storm scored (12)
first place finishes among the various races and age groups. Leading in
first place finishes for the Storm were Davon Anderson, Michael Thomas and
Kristen Burgess who all placed first in (2) events. The Storm youth girls
division led the way in the 100m and 200 meter hurdle with first and second
place finishes in both events. Field events were ongoing throughout the day
and included the long jump and shot put.
Thanks to all of the volunteers who made the season home meet a success. A
special thanks to head coach Kelly Hazel whose tireless efforts and support
continue to inspire us all. The Storm will compete in State and Regional
meets throughout the month of June.
