As practice begins for the new squad for 2008-2009, the Pinewood girls
are reminded of the outstanding season they had in the prior year.
Winning the State Championship in 2007 seemed to be the perfect ending,
but in an unexpected twist, there was more good news to be shared among
the squad from the prior year.
Emily Weathers, who will be attending Presbyterian College next fall,
traveled to Clinton recently to attend cheerleading tryouts for the
coming year. Presbyterian's Cheerleading Program has two teams; an
all-girl squad and a more elite, coed squad. Emily spent the day
working with both the all-girl and coed stunt groups, meeting and
working with many of the returning squad members. She also had to
execute her tumbling skills and learn and perform the PC fight song for
the judges.
After a full day of stunting and tumbling, she returned home to await
the news. The next day, PC Head Coach Laurie Addison, called with the
news. Not only had she made the team, she had received one of the
coveted spots on the coed team - of which there were only 2. Coach
Addison also surprised Emily by telling her that she will be in the
highest group of scholarship recipients; the amount of money received is
based on ability and tryout score.
Emily first began cheering at Pinewood in the 5th grade, and was moved
to the Varsity squad her 8th grade year; her first year as a Captain was
during her Sophomore year at Pinewood. She is a three-time All-American
Nominee, and was given the All-American designation in the summer of
2007. She has also won numerous awards for her Leadership and positive
influence on the team. She also serves as a mentor to a 6th grader
cheerleader. The "cheerleading little sister" is a mentoring program

"Emily is our first scholarship recipient for cheerleading, and to say
that I am proud of her doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. It
seems fitting, given her contributions to this program over the years,
that her Senior year we would win our first State Championship, and then
she would become the first to receive a cheerleading scholarship. Emily
has definitely left her mark on this program, and has shown all the
younger girls what you can achieve if you work hard and put your energy
into something you love to do," said Coach Mann.
